Lunch Box Care and Use

What is the recommended age for using PlanetBox products?

PlanetBox products are designed for safety and durability, though please note they contain small parts and are intended for individuals ages 3 and older.

Can my child open and close the PlanetBox by themselves?

To help you find the best fit for your needs, we recommend the following age guidelines based on the dexterity typically required for our different locking systems. Please keep in mind that these are general suggestions, as we recognize that individuals develop fine motor skills at different rates:

  • Rover, Launch, and Shuttle: The single-latch design is generally ideal for individuals aged 3 and older.
  • Voyager: Usually recommended for older children, specifically those aged 8 and up.
  • Explorer: Typically designed for those aged 12 and up.

You can see a variety of packed lunches on our Blog.

Are your lunch boxes leak-proof?

Both the Explorer and Voyager lunch boxes are fully leak-proof.

While our Launch, Rover, and Shuttle models are designed to keep foods separated during transport, they are not airtight or leak-proof. To ensure a mess-free experience with these models, we recommend packing wet foods and dips—such as yogurt or sauces—inside our Dipper containers.

Will PlanetBoxes keep my food hot?

The Insulated Hot or Cold Food Container keeps food hot for up to 12 hours. Other models—including the Explorer, Launch, Rover, Shuttle, and Voyager—are not designed to retain heat. While you can pack warm food in these boxes, it will typically reach room temperature by lunchtime.

For reheating, the Explorer includes a stainless steel, microwave-safe tray insert. Please note that only this removable tray is microwave-safe; the rest of the lunch box should not be placed in the microwave. The Voyager model is not for oven or microwave use.

Can I heat my PlanetBox in the oven?

Only the Explorer's removable tray is designed to be used in the oven. The low profile sides and rounded corners of the tray make it microwave friendly.

Cautions:

  • Always use caution handling the tray when it is hot and make sure to wear a protective oven mitt.
  • Refer to your microwave oven owner's manual as to whether you can safely use a metal tray in it.
  • If you do put the Explorer's tray in the microwave, place it in the middle of the oven away from the walls.
  • Do not heat any other stainless steel items in the microwave at the same time as the tray.
  • Do not use the tray in the microwave if it is dented or damaged in any way.

The Rover, Shuttle, Launch and Voyager were not designed with the intent of using them in an oven. While putting them in a gas or electric oven (not microwave) will not hurt the stainless steel, the metal will heat up quickly and needs to be handled with extreme caution.

How do I seal the Voyager's lid?

The Voyager lunch box is recommended for ages 8 and up. Below are the instructions for properly securing the silicone lid to your four-compartment lunch box to ensure a leak-proof seal:

1) Secure the outer edges: Align the lid over the box and press down firmly along all four outer edges.

2) Release air from each compartment: Starting at one corner, place your thumb over the center of a compartment. With your other hand, slightly lift the corner of the lid to release trapped air, then press down firmly on that corner to secure it. Repeat this process for each section of the lunch box.

3) Final check: Once all air has been released, ensure the outer edges remain secure by running your hand along the perimeter and pressing down on all four sides.

Why is the Explorer's removable metal tray microwave safe?

The low profile sides and rounded corners of the tray make it microwave safe.  Before using the tray, we recommend you refer to your microwave's owners manual to determine whether or not you can safely use materials like metal trays in your unit.

Can I buy spare latches, seals and other parts?

Spare parts can be found here: Spare Parts

How can I keep my food cold?

Our Hot or Cold Insulated Food Container is double-walled and will maintain temperature for up to 12 hours.

Since our stainless steel boxes are not insulated, here is the best way to keep things cool until lunch:

  • Chill overnight: Pack your lunch the night before and store the entire box (without magnets) in the fridge.
  • Morning prep: Add dry foods in the morning, wipe any condensation from the lid, and reapply your magnets.
  • Ice packs: Place the box in its carry bag with one ice pack on top and another underneath to create a "blanket of cold."

For perishable foods being stored for long periods, we always recommend keeping them in a refrigerator whenever possible.

Will my sandwich fit inside my PlanetBox?

There are many different sizes of bread, including varieties that will fit inside each of our PlanetBoxes. Here are the dimensions (inches) of the large compartments for each of our systems:

Rover:  4 x 4 x 1.5

Shuttle:  4.25 x 4.25 x 2

Launch:  6.75 x 4.5 x 2

Explorer: 7.7 x 5.4 x 3.3

Voyager: 4.3 x 3.7 x 1.4

Will my food get stale?

To keep food from getting stale, we recommend keeping it cool, dry. For the best results, try packing your dry foods right before leaving home and putting any wet foods inside a Dipper.

Will the PlanetBox keep my fruit from getting brown?

Once you cut into a fruit, the oxidation process that makes it brown begins. To help protect your fruit, you can try these tips:

  • Timing: Prepare the fruit as close to packing as possible.
  • Tools: Use a sharp knife to minimize microscopic bruising.
  • Citrus: Toss the fruit with lemon or lime juice. The acid in citrus slows the chemical reaction that causes browning. Be sure to blot the fruit on a towel after tossing.
  • Powders: You can also sprinkle powders made from ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and sugar over the fruit to stop it from browning.
Is PlanetBox too heavy for my child to carry?

Each child is unique. To help you choose the right fit, here are the approximate weights of our empty lunch boxes, including their Dippers and a carry bag:

Rover + Magnet Set + Big Dipper + Little Dipper + Rover/Launch Carry Bag = 2.6 lbs

Launch + Magnet Set + Tall Dipper + Rover/Launch Carry Bag = 2.4 lbs

Shuttle + Magnet Set + Tall Dipper + Shuttle Carry Bag = 1.3  lbs

Explorer (ages 12+) + Magnet Set + Lunch Sack = 1.2 lbs

How do I clean the lunch box?

PlanetBox compartments wipe down easily with a sponge, water, and mild soap—specifically phosphate-free and chlorine bleach-free varieties. You may also clean your lunch box in the dishwasher. Please remember to remove the magnets before washing to keep them dry and prevent the box from rusting.

During school vacations, can I store the magnets on the PlanetBox lid?

We recommend removing the magnets when your PlanetBox is not in use.

If the lunch box is not completely dry, the magnets can degrade and cause the lid to rust. For safe keeping, you can store your magnets on the refrigerator or in another convenient spot. Many customers also choose to store them inside the original cardboard lunch box packaging or in the pocket of the carry bag.

Should I remove the magnets before I clean my PlanetBox?

Yes, always remove the magnets from the top of your PlanetBox lid before cleaning your lunchbox. Try storing the magnets on the refrigerator until you are ready to take your packed lunch with you.

How do the magnets stick to the lunch box?

We use 18/0 (400 series) stainless steel for the box lids. The 400 series has a lower nickel content, which makes it much better for holding our magnets.

Because the 400 series material is harder to work with, it isn't suitable for the deep pockets of the lower trays, but it is the perfect surface for customizing the lids with any of our fun magnet sets.

Can I recycle a PlanetBox?

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable. Be sure to check if your local recycling facility accepts stainless steel or look for local drop-off locations.

Can I buy your Space Station salad lunch box?

The leak-proof Space Station salad box was a limited run product that is no longer available.

Lunch Box Troubleshooting

The leak-proof Space Station salad box was a limited run product that is no longer available.

To install the blue o-ring into the lid, start by pushing it into one of the corners and then thread it around the remainder of the lid.

My Explorer's lid is stuck. How can I open it?

It is possible for pressure to build between the lid and tray during shipping. You can try the following methods to release the pressure:

 1) Use your hands to rotate the lid and tray in opposite directions (kind of like opening a jar.)

 2) Try using a blunt butter knife to press down in between where the lid and tray meet.

 3) Hold the lunch box under running tap water.

Will scratches hurt my PlanetBox?

There are no coatings on our stainless steel. Over time, it is completely normal for the boxes to scratch or dull, but this will not affect the functioning or safety of your PlanetBox.

My PlanetBox's clip is loose. How do I adjust it?

The clasps can occasionally loosen. The good news is that they are designed to be adjustable to fit your needs and what works best for you. To tighten the fit, please follow these steps:

1. Place your open box on a firm surface.
2. Position your thumbs on both sides of the top of the clip.
3. Give the clip a firm push toward the box (away from you).

Test the latch by opening and closing it. If it remains loose, repeat the process with more pressure. It requires a small but firm push to shift the clasp. If you need it, we created a short video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOkdGMSnF9Q

If you are unable to adjust the latch, we sell spares that will fix your lunch box.  https://www.planetbox.com/collections/spare-parts/products/replacement-lunchbox-latch

If you purchased your PlanetBox within the last five years, write to us at info@planetbox.com with your order number, shipping address and the type of lunch box you own (Rover/Shuttle/Launch) and we will send a replacement latch to you so that you can enjoy your PlanetBox.

How do I remove spots or rust from my PlanetBox?

We understand that you want your PlanetBox to look spot free so we’d like to explain where spots can come from, why they are harmless and how you can remove them.

 COMMON CAUSES

1)  Detergents that contain bleach or sodium hypochlorite can cause pitting that “eats away” at stainless steel.

2)  Foreign material can attach itself to the container and then start to corrode. This happens when the stainless steel is washed with other carbon steel items such as sharp kitchen knives and rusty baking pans.

3)  If the magnets get wet, the lunch box lid will rust and the magnets will degrade leaving material behind. This occurs if your box is wet or damp when you place the magnets on the lid. What can be done to fix this is cleaning off the rust, switching to a new set of magnets and always making sure the lid is completely dry before applying the magnets.

CLEANING THE CONTAINER

There are no coatings on our containers. Please try using any of the following methods to remove spots:

1)  Fine Steel Wool: Start by washing the container under running water. Use Super Fine Steel Wool (#000 is one such ranking) and start by lightly buffing the spotted area. Often it just takes a few strokes under light pressure to remove the spots. If that doesn’t do it, proceed to work the surface harder with the steel wool pad. Rinse with running water as you are working and very quickly you’ll have removed the spots.

or

2)  Baking Soda and Water Paste: Make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the area that needs to be cleaned. Leave the paste on for an hour and then scrub off and rinse with soap and water.

or

3)  Lemon Juice and Salt: Cover the rusted areas with salt and then squeeze fresh lemon juice (stay away from bottled lemon juice, you want juice from a real lemon) over the layer of salt. Don’t discard the used lemon. Let the salt and lemon mixture sit for about two hours, then use the lemon rind as a scrubber to remove the rust. If there are particularly stubborn rust stains, break out the steel wool, a scouring pad, or a wire brush. When done, rinse off the lemon juice, salt, and rust residue, and dry the metal item thoroughly.

How can I remove stuck magnets from my PlanetBox's lid?

To remove magnets that have gotten wet and become stuck to the lunch box lid, please try the following method:

Step 1: Heat the magnet using a hairdryer. As the magnet becomes more pliable from the heat, lift the edge with a plastic scraper.

Step 2:  As you pry up the magnet, spray under it with warm, soapy water.  This should help lubricate it and make it easier to remove

Step 3:  After you pull the magnet off, wash the area thoroughly using the warm, soapy water to remove any remaining residue.

You can use a new set of magnets when the box is completely dry.

Why can't I close my Rover lid?

Please make sure that the Little Dipper is placed in the far left compartment.  The space at the back of the Rover allows the lid to flex to accommodate the Little Dipper. The lid will be hard to close if the Little Dipper is in the left front compartment.

Is the back of my PlanetBox okay?

It is normal for there to be a space at the back of your PlanetBox Rover, Launch and Shuttle.  It is an intentional part of the design and allows the box to accommodate the Dipper(s). The back of the lid does not need to be flush with the tray. On the Rover, in particular, the rear right side (when looking at the back of the lunchbox) is slightly lifted. The metal rod in the hinge does not extend from one rear corner to the other. The rod resides only inside the metal sheath.

How can I fix a dent in my PlanetBox?

A bend in stainless steel is rather easy to fix as opposed to plastic which just breaks. All you need is a set of pliers and a thin, soft cloth like a dishtowel. The cloth is used to keep the pliers from scratching the metal but really a scratch won't hurt the metal or limit the usefulness of the lunch box.

  1. Wrap the cloth around the bent edge.
  2. Grasp the edge with the pliers.
  3. Pull outwards to straighten the corner.

Here is a short video showing you how to adjust the box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrfN2M2-Cuk
