DIY Electrolyte Drink for Hot Summer Days

DIY Electrolyte Drink for Hot Summer Days

Recipe by Chloe Grubb

When the temperatures climb, plain water isn't always enough. This homemade electrolyte drink is a refreshing way to stay hydrated, made with simple ingredients that help replenish electrolytes after a day at the beach, the park, or at a backyard BBQ.

Mix up a big carafe to keep in the fridge, pour it into your PlanetGoods Water Bottle for the day, or freeze it for your kiddo in an Arctic Chill Freezable Squeeze Pack for a cool treat that helps keep lunch chilled. However you pack it, it's an easy way to stay refreshed all summer long.

Why These Ingredients Work:

Coconut Water: Naturally rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, coconut water provides a refreshing base that helps replenish electrolytes lost through sweat. Its natural sugars also support hydration without making the drink overly sweet.

Lite Salt: A small pinch of Lite Salt adds both sodium and potassium, two electrolytes your body needs to maintain hydration and replace what's lost on hot days or after activity.

Basil Seeds: Once soaked, basil seeds develop a soft, gel-like coating that adds texture and helps the drink feel extra refreshing. They're also a source of fiber and naturally contain minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups (360g) coconut water
  • 1 cup (240g) fruit juice of choice (see note)
  • ½ cup (120g) water or tea
  • ⅛ tsp lite salt (look for ones that are a mix of sodium chloride and potassium chloride)
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 2 tbsp lemon or lime juice (optional)
  • ¼ cup basil seeds

Instructions:

  1. Put the first four ingredients (coconut water, juice, water/tea, and lite salt) in jar or carafe. Shake or stir until mixed well.
  2. Add honey or lemon/lime juice to preference. Once the flavor is adjusted, add basil seeds and shake/stir well again. Allow 20-30 minutes for basil seeds to hydrate, shaking/stirring occasionally.
  3. Store in the fridge and serve chilled.
